Youth Worker (Middle School) – Part-Time
We are seeking an Youth Worker for our 6th-8th graders, who will be responsible for creating lesson plans, encouraging positive social interaction and mindfulness, overseeing/supporting students’ homework completion, and implementing projects including science and other STEM activities, arts & crafts, and celebrating holidays with the children in the younger after-school groups. The Youth Worker will also collaborate with other staff to facilitate one of the Girl Talk groups, and help monitor the adolescents during the monthly Movie Nights.
This is a part-time position for the academic year (September 2015-June 2016).
Responsibilities:
After School
-
Provide direct services to children and youth participants, particularly in the After-School program, including leading activities, facilitating groups and providing homework help for children in 6-8th Grade

Create, plan, and lead all holiday special events for children in K-5th grade with 6-8th grade students

Guide 6-8th grade students during field trips and all out-door excursions

Provide task supervision for Youth Program volunteers

Keep parents updated with any afterschool related information in Spanish and English via phone calls, letters as well as in person

Compile report cards

Assist with conducting assessments and evaluations

Participate in program meetings and trainings

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Hours
18 hour/week, with fixed hours: Mondays-Thursdays: 1:30-6pm, on the New York City public school academic calendar.
Girl Talk
-
Provide direct services to girls in grades 6-9th including leading activities, facilitating groups both in and outdoors. Discuss relevant issue like: sex, race, gender, drugs, the media and bullying.

Plan and participate alongside supervisors and social work interns in an end of the year sleepover

Guide 6-9th grade students during field trips and all out door excursions

Hours
3 hours/week, with fixed hours: Fridays 2-5pm, on the NYC public school academic calendar.
Movie Nights

Provide direct services to girls and boys in grades 6-9th

Monitor student behavior

Assist with the setup and clean up of movie nights

Provide task supervision for Youth Program volunteers

Assist with the dismissal of students and closing of the building
Hours
4 hours/monthly, with fixed hours: Fridays 5:30-9:30pm
Qualifications:

BA/BS degree preferred
-
Experience working with groups of school-age children in the 6-8th Grade;

Demonstrated ability to assist children in grades 6-8th with their homework;

Exhibits high energy, warmth, enthusiasm and patience in working with youth;

Passion to work in a team environment and meet high expectations for youth and staff;

Ability to take initiative and maintain flexibility

Hard working, reliable, responsible and creative

Conversational and written Spanish is preferred
