Mercy Center Volunteer Opportunities

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Instructors: Provide language instruction for adults. Prior teaching experience required. Morning, afternoon and evening classes, Monday - Friday, September - June. Commitment: at least 2 days/week, 3 hours/day.

Citizenship Instructors: Help aspiring US citizens prepare for the exam by teaching citizenship class using a set curriculum. Classes run for six-week cycles, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12:15 pm – 2:15 pm OR Saturdays 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.

After School Program Assistants: Assist with tutoring/homework, computer tutorials, field trips (museums, cultural sites, etc.) and other enrichment activities for children grades K-5. Sessions: Monday − Thursday, 3:15pm − 6:00pm. Commitment: 1 − 4 days/week, September − June.

Reading Tutors: Provide one-on-one or small group reading instruction for children, grades K-5, who are reading below grade level. Prior teaching experience a plus. Saturday morning sessions, September – May.

Babysitters: Help babysit the young children (18 months – 3 years old) of our adult ESOL students while the adults attend class. Tuesday − Friday, mornings, September – June. Childhood education experience a plus.

Immigrant Services: Screen potential naturalization applicants, assist with completion of naturalization applications, and help candidates prepare for citizenship interviews. Must speak Spanish. Sessions: Monday – Friday, all year. Commitment: 1− 5 days/week, 4hrs/day.
