Julia at a Family Weekend
Julia first came to Mercy Center to learn English, as so many do. As a single mother, she knew it was up to her to improve her skills and seek out opportunities. She found herself becoming more and more involved in various programs, and eventually her family joined the Family Development program and achieved the goals they set.
Julia had an individual goal as well. She was an aspiring entrepreneur, a maker of delectable pupusas, a traditional Salvadoran dish made of a stuffed corn tortilla. Julia completed a Street Vending Project at Mercy Center and succeeded in obtaining her license. Slowly she built a reputation within the local community. Now whenever the “Pupusa Lady” arrives, word spreads like wildfire and a line quickly forms. Her pupusas are the best in the neighborhood!
